Ferrari
Ferrari is probably the most famous sports car maker in the world. Which makes it a little funny that most of their business comes from selling touring cars rather than sports cars. Few companies understand marketing better than Ferrari, by building very expensive, high performance sports cars in limited numbers they can build their reputation. They can then use that reputation to sell lower priced touring cars in large numbers, something they have been doing successfully for years.
It is a little bit funny that the name Ferrari has become synonymous with sports cars given that they never intended to make them. In fact they never intended to build their own cars at all. Ferrari initially started out running race cars for Alfa Romeo but this changed when the Italian government took over ownership of Alfa Romeo. With no cars to run Ferrari had to build their own race cars. The result was some of the most successful race cars on the track. This success naturally created a demand for Ferrari to build road cars, something that they had no interest in doing. However the increasing cost of racing eventually made it necessary to find other sources of income and Ferrari eventually had to relent and start building road cars.
The early Ferrari road cars with built with performance in mind and were in reality little more than modified racing cars. This attracted a lot of buyers, although the cars were only ever built in small batches. Because they never intended to build cars for the road they didn't really put much effort into building the cars for comfort. Eventually they came to the realization that if they were going to sell road cars to pay for their racing they would have to make a proper effort to run a car manufacturing business. The result was a wider variety of cars being produced and more effort being put into things like comfort than had gone into the earlier versions of their cars. This greatly increased sales and turned the company into the iconic brand that it is today.
Despite the reputation that Ferrari has for building sports cars most of its sales are actually high performance touring cars. While their sports cars attract most of the attention it is the touring cars that actually make them money. This has been the case almost from the start. As soon as they decided that they needed to design cars specifically for road use and not just adapt race cars they have been selling more touring cars than sports cars. The main reason for this is cost; their sports cars are very expensive and built in limited numbers. While the touring cars while still expensive are at least at attainable prices. Really Ferrari build limited production sports cars as way to establish their reputation and their brand but actually make their money by selling lower priced high performance touring cars.
